MG4 Urban: demisting and cold-weather camera warnings

For MG4 EV Urban only. These controls are not instructions for the earlier rear-wheel-drive MG4 or the refreshed MG4 EV.

The short answer

Cabin heating and windscreen demisting are different settings. Use the front Defrost/Demist control to clear the glass. A warm cabin does not prove that the windscreen area used by the front camera is clear.

A cold morning is not a diagnosis. Record the full warning rather than assuming that frost explains it.

Find the right control while parked

The Urban handbook shows a windscreen-shaped Defrost/Demist button and a separate heated rear-window button on the physical climate panel below the screen. In its diagram, front demist is item 3 and rear-window heating is item 4. Match the symbols to your own car before using either.

Open the official Urban control diagram, page 188.

Clear the front glass

  1. Park safely and identify the front Defrost/Demist button.
  2. Press it. Its indicator should light. The handbook says this mode brings in outside air and switches on the air-conditioning cooling function as part of clearing the glass. That does not mean you have selected ordinary cold cabin cooling by mistake.
  3. Wait until the windscreen and side windows give you a clear view before driving. Clear ice from the outside using the appropriate vehicle-care instructions too.
  4. When visibility is clear, press the button again to return to the previous climate setting. Changing the air-distribution mode also exits front demisting, so check the result after changing controls.

The rear-window heater is a separate function. Do not scrape the heating elements on the inside of the rear glass.

Why can assistance warnings appear?

The handbook lists mist, ice, dirt and other obstructions in the front camera's windscreen view among conditions that can limit its performance. Cabin warming alone does not establish that this area is clear.

While safely parked, look for an obvious obstruction without removing covers or touching the camera. Do not treat an assistance system as available until the car confirms it is available. Do not drive a few miles simply to try to make a warning disappear.

Stop and get help when needed

Do not drive without a clear view. A brake, steering or other critical warning needs its own safety response; do not explain it away as condensation. If a warning remains after the glass is clear, photograph its complete wording and ask an MG repairer or assistance provider what to do next.

Do not remove, recalibrate or try to bypass the camera.

Source and next steps

Checked 1 November 2026 against the official UK MG4 EV Urban handbook, PDF pages 188-189 and 204. Match the handbook to your vehicle and fitted controls. This is a control explanation, not a diagnosis of a particular warning.

For battery range and charging, use the separate winter guide. See Urban first-week checks or fault triage for the next step.
