MGS5: cabin lights do not come on when a door opens

For MGS5 EV. The roof-console layout can differ with the fitted equipment. Match your controls to the correct handbook diagram.

The short answer

A reading lamp can work manually even when automatic door-triggered lighting is switched off. The MGS5 has separate manual and automatic interior-light controls.

Do not press SOS or eCall to test a lamp. If you are unsure which control is which, stop and use the handbook diagram or ask the retailer to show you.

Three controls with different jobs

The official handbook's interior-lighting diagram uses these numbers:

  • 1: master lamp switch. This switches the front and rear interior lamps on or off together.
  • 2: individual reading-lamp controls. These operate the front lamp on the corresponding side.
  • 3: automatic-lighting control. This enables or disables automatic operation.

These are diagram labels, not a promise that every roof console has the same physical arrangement. Open the official MGS5 diagram, page 89 and compare it with your car.

A simple parked check

  1. With the car safely parked, check whether an individual reading lamp works using its identified lamp control.
  2. Find the automatic-lighting control from the matching diagram. It is separate from simply turning a reading lamp on.
  3. If automatic operation is disabled, use that control to enable it. Then check the response to unlocking or opening a door.
  4. If the result is unclear, stop toggling unfamiliar overhead buttons. Ask the retailer to demonstrate the correct setting on your roof console.

The handbook lists unlocking the car and opening a door among the events that turn the interior lamps on when automatic control is enabled. Do not mistake the lamp's manual on/off setting for the automatic function.

When it may be more than a setting

If manual lighting works but the correct automatic setting does not give the documented response, record which doors and controls you tried and ask an MG repairer to investigate.

If the car also will not unlock, its displays are dead or other electrical functions are missing, use the existing no-power and 12V checks. A cabin lamp alone cannot establish a battery diagnosis.

Do not remove the roof console, disturb wiring or test the emergency-call button as a workaround.

Source and next steps

Checked 1 November 2026 against the official UK MGS5 handbook, PDF page 89. The handbook notes that roof-console styles vary with configuration. Use the edition that matches your vehicle.
