MG4 V2L will not start—or stops early?

Start the established MG4 discharge session, check the reserve and equipment limits, and stop safely before unplugging.

V2L needs the correct discharge kit and an active discharge session. Plugging an ordinary charging cable into the MG4 does not turn it into a mains outlet. Check the kit, reserve setting and session state before blaming the appliance.

Exact-car boundary: established MG4, MY23 handbook Version 2.0, September 2023, printed pages 190–191. This procedure does not certify MG4 Urban, the revised 2026 car, an aftermarket adapter or a particular appliance. Checked 17 October 2026.

01 / Confirm the equipment before connecting

Use the discharge kit specified as suitable for the exact car and market. Read its instructions and ratings. A compatible-looking Type 2 connector, a marketplace listing or a socket marked 13 A does not establish the vehicle's available output or the kit's protection arrangements.

Inspect the kit, socket and appliance lead for damage and keep connections dry. Do not use equipment that is hot, damaged, wet or missing its instructions. There is no universal output figure in this guide: stay within the lowest applicable vehicle, kit and appliance limit.

02 / Start discharge in the car

  1. Park and secure the car, then unlock and access the AC charging port.
  2. Connect the appropriate discharge connector fully. The cited handbook describes a blue port indicator when connected.
  3. Open energy management, set the discharge cut-off reserve and select Start discharging. Connection alone is not the same as starting the session.
  4. Check the session indication before switching on a suitable appliance according to the kit's instructions. Keep enough battery for the journey you still need to make.

The MG4 discharge instructions say the connector locks during discharge, the car cannot enter READY, and the session can continue when the infotainment screen goes off. A dark screen therefore does not prove the socket is dead.

03 / It starts, then stops

First check whether the battery has reached the selected reserve and whether the session reports a stop or fault. Photograph the message while parked. Note the appliance's stated rating and whether the interruption occurs immediately, at startup or after some time.

If one suitable low-load appliance works but another does not, that is a comparison result—not proof that increasing a limit or bypassing protection is safe. Some appliances have different starting and running demands. Check the manufacturer instructions rather than repeatedly reconnecting a tripping load. Stop at sparks, burning smell, smoke, unusual heat or a fault indication.

04 / Stop the session before removing the kit

Switch the appliance off and follow the kit's instructions. Use Stop discharging in the car; the cited handbook says the electronic lock then releases. Remove using the connector handle, never by pulling the cable or forcing a locked plug. Check for debris, refit the cover and close the charge door.

05 / Can it supply the house in a power cut?

This handbook's discharge-kit procedure is for supplying external equipment. It is not a domestic wiring/changeover design. Never connect V2L to a wall socket to energise house wiring, make a plug-to-plug lead or alter the adapter's earthing/protection. A house connection is a separate electrical design and installation question.

UK owner questions about powering a home prompted this boundary. Forum examples of kettles or heaters do not approve your kit or installation. If you only need one appliance, establish its suitability with the approved kit rather than treating V2L as whole-house backup.

06 / Useful evidence if no output remains

Record exact MG4 version, kit identification/rating, battery percentage, reserve, displayed session state, port indication, appliance rating and the point at which it stops. Ask for a demonstration using the correct kit and a suitable known-good load. That separates failure to start the session from a kit, load or vehicle fault.

First useful check

With the correct discharge kit, check the active discharge session and battery reserve before testing a suitable load.

Read the result

A reserve cutoff or inactive discharge session differs from an unsupported or faulty load/adapter.

Stop or change approach: Never backfeed house wiring or force a locked connector. Stop for hot, wet or damaged equipment.

Prepare a useful record

Battery level/reserve, kit rating, load, session state and any message.

Evidence and answer standard

Documented checks; outcome depends on the test. The date records an evidence review, not a physical test of your car. A forum report can identify a question; it cannot establish a universal repair.
