Does the MG4 lock when you walk away?

On the established MG4, walking away after using the car is not a substitute for locking it. The automatic re-lock described in the handbook concerns an unlock followed by no further action. It is easy to confuse that with a car that locks whenever its key leaves.

Exact-car boundary: this answer uses the MG4 MY23 handbook, Version 2.0 dated 7 September 2023, for the established 2022–2025 generation. It does not certify MG4 Urban, the revised 2026 MG4, every trim or aftermarket equipment. Match your handbook. Checked 17 October 2026.

01 / Three different meanings of “auto lock”

  • Parked locking: you deliberately secure the car after getting out.
  • Unused-unlock re-lock: the car was locked, you unlocked it, but did not then use it. The handbook documents a 30-second re-lock after keyless unlocking with no further action.
  • Locking while driving: a separate behaviour. Even where fitted or enabled, it says nothing about whether the car locks after you leave.

The MG handbook, pages 162–163, instructs the driver to press the front door-handle button to lock after exiting and closing the door. It does not document a walk-away locking setting for this edition.

02 / A simple leaving-the-car routine

  1. Stop, secure the car, take the key with you and check that nobody is being left inside.
  2. Close the doors and tailgate fully. Use the fob's lock control, or the documented front-handle button with the key in range.
  3. Check the response rather than assuming the command succeeded. A horn warning needs investigation.
  4. If you want to check a door physically, keep all working keys away from the car and have someone without a key try the handle. A key beside the handle can allow a normal keyless unlock and confuse the test. Keep the key safely in your possession; never leave it inside to test lock-out prevention.

Build this into the routine after collecting something from the cabin too. An earlier automatic re-lock when no door was opened does not prove it will re-lock after an actual visit to the car.

03 / It beeps when I try to lock

The MY23 handbook distinguishes an incompletely closed driver's door from another open closure. The former prevents normal locking and arming; the latter can leave incomplete alarm protection. A horn sound is not confirmation that everything is secure.

Check the displayed door-open indications and close each affected door, tailgate or bonnet normally. Look for an obvious trapped item without reaching into the latch. Retry the normal lock command once. Do not slam repeatedly, bypass a latch or assume folding mirrors prove security.

04 / How to separate a routine mistake from a fault

  • It locks with the fob, but not the handle: record the handle used and whether the key is with you. Compare the documented keyless method; do not buy parts based on this one result.
  • It refuses both commands: check closure warnings and the key's normal operation. Record exactly which doors remain openable with keys kept away.
  • It unlocks unexpectedly: note whether a door was opened, another key was nearby, or a remote command was used. Do not infer the cause of an intrusion from a forum story.

Give the repairer the failed command, closure indications, key location, model/year and a parked demonstration. Ask them to reproduce that sequence and record the result. That is a better starting point than an unexplained request to “enable auto lock”.

UK community discussion highlighted confusion between walking away and unused-unlock re-locking. Individual theft explanations were not adopted as diagnoses. Vehicle procedures above come from the MG handbook, not those guesses.

First useful check

Separate locking after you park from automatic re-lock after an unlock with no opening; check closures and the key operation.

Read the result

A successful lock and normal confirmation differs from a mislock warning. Walking away alone is not proof the vehicle is secure.

Stop or change approach: Keep a usable key outside the car. Do not leave occupants or pets inside to test locking.

Prepare a useful record

Door/boot state, key used, confirmation and whether a door had actually been opened.

Keep registration, VIN, account numbers and personal addresses out of this note. Nothing typed here is sent to us or saved automatically. Copy it before leaving the page.

Evidence and answer standard

Documented checks; outcome depends on the test. The date records an evidence review, not a physical test of your car. A forum report can identify a question; it cannot establish a universal repair.
