MG4 Auto Hold: enabled, holding—or not available in reverse?

Check the active state at a stop, understand reverse behaviour and distinguish a fault warning from standby.

Owner question → handbook check → practical test · free UK owner help

Auto Hold being switched on does not mean it is actively holding the car. Confirm the active indication before taking your foot away from the brake. This is the established UK MG4 EV, 2022–2025, checked against MY23 handbook pages 41 and 206–207; it is not MG4 EV Urban or a later revised MG4.

State illustration; use the actual dashboard indication.

1. Why does it creep at a stop when Auto Hold is switched on?

Start with the handbook prerequisites: READY, driver’s belt fastened and driver’s door closed. Switch Auto Hold on using the infotainment control. That enables standby; it is not confirmation that the brakes are holding.

When moving forward, stop with the footbrake and press it firmly to enter the holding state. The checked manual says a firm stop can enter that state directly, and a further firm brake press can release it again. Watch the actual indication; do not pump the pedal repeatedly or try to prove the system on a steep slope. If it remains in standby, maintain control with the brake and record which prerequisite or warning differs.

UK MG4 owners have asked about creep and how firmly to press. Those accounts do not establish a software defect or a special pedal trick. The documented state transition is the useful first check. A persistent Auto Hold fault message is a separate branch: preserve the wording and request diagnosis, rather than assuming it merely needs a harder press.

2. Why does Auto Hold not stop the car rolling in reverse?

The MY23 handbook explicitly says Auto Hold does not activate in R, and selecting R releases the holding state. Control reversing with the footbrake; do not assume the forward-stop behaviour will catch the car. This matters especially in a garage, on a slope or near a person or obstacle.

After any unexpected movement, stop safely and record the selected gear and hold indication. An observed reverse release is different from forward active hold failing. Do not reproduce a near-miss for a video. If movement does not match pedal/gear inputs, or normal braking is affected, stop using the car and arrange assistance.

What about traffic lights, parking and the car wash?

Auto Hold supports attended temporary stops. It is not a substitute for confirming Park and the parking brake before leaving. The manual describes circumstances in which EPB takes over and warns that stability is not guaranteed on every slope or slippery surface. It also instructs turning Auto Hold off for an automatic car wash; the wash operator and matching vehicle instructions must agree on the complete procedure before entry.

Useful support record: exact MG4 generation, READY/belt/door state, forward or reverse, hold indicator, brake/EPB messages and the sequence before movement. Ask the repairer to separate standby/activation from a recorded system fault. Red brake warnings or impaired braking require the manual’s stop response, not another trial.

Next: confirm established MG4 identity and handbook · prepare a written service/repair record.

Evidence checked · Review due

First useful check

With READY, belt and door conditions met, stop moving forward using the brake and confirm the active hold indication, not just the enabled setting.

Read the result

Standby differs from active holding; selecting R releases holding and Auto Hold does not activate in reverse in this handbook.

Stop or change approach: Do not rely on hold in reverse, test on slopes or reproduce near-misses. Stop for impaired braking or unintended movement.

Prepare a useful record

Exact generation, READY/belt/door state, gear, hold indication, warning wording and action before movement.

Evidence and answer standard

Documented checks and diagnostic distinctions; owner reports identify concerns, not universal repairs. The date records an evidence review, not a physical test of your car. A forum report can identify a question; it cannot establish a universal repair.
