The phone charging does not prove that the car has a working data connection. Start with the correct socket and a direct data cable, then test the phone and car separately. You do not need to unbind iSMART to troubleshoot wired CarPlay or Android Auto.
For the established UK MG4 EV using the original wired projection system, including relevant 2022–2025 cars. MG4 EV Urban and later revised infotainment systems are not covered by this socket/menu procedure. Match your in-car handbook. Checked 17 October 2026.
01 / Choose the connection you are fixing
Bluetooth calls/music, iSMART remote services and phone projection are separate connections. Being able to call over Bluetooth or refresh the battery percentage in iSMART does not prove CarPlay or Android Auto should be running. For this test, remove any aftermarket wireless adapter and connect directly. This establishes a baseline before an accessory adds another possible failure.
The original MG4 handbook documents USB connection followed by selecting Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on the home screen. It does not turn a wired system into a wireless one when you pair Bluetooth. If your car has a newer system, follow that edition’s instructions instead.
02 / The correct socket comes before a new cable
On the established MG4 centre-console arrangement, start with the front USB-A port identified for phone interconnection in the matching handbook. Do not assume the adjacent USB-C port or a rear passenger socket supports projection because it charges the phone.
Do not describe USB-C as universally “charge-only”: media-file support and phone-projection support are different capabilities. The point of this check is the socket assigned to CarPlay/Android Auto on your exact vehicle, not the shape of the connector alone. MG’s handbook describes the console sockets in the Power Socket section and the setup in Vehicle-Mobile Phone Interconnection.
03 / Run one clean connection test
- Park safely, secure the car and let the infotainment home screen finish starting. Keep the phone and cable clear of pedals and the selector.
- Use one short, known-good data cable directly between the assigned car port and the phone. Remove hubs, extensions and chained adapters. A cable working at a wall charger proves power delivery, not data reliability.
- Unlock the phone and reconnect it. Read and approve the relevant setup prompts on both screens. Select the projection icon on the MG display if it does not open automatically.
- Check that the projection home screen appears, play a short audio clip and open a navigation destination while still parked. Check once more after the phone locks normally.
- If it fails, change only the cable and repeat. Borrow a suitable cable before buying several based on forum recommendations. A particular brand is not a guaranteed fix for every phone.
Google recommends a high-quality cable under one metre without hubs or extensions. Apple also recommends trying another cable and says a direct USB connection can avoid problems caused by some adapter combinations.
04 / If you use an iPhone
Follow Apple’s current CarPlay troubleshooting sequence: check iOS, the connection, Siri and whether Screen Time restrictions allow CarPlay. If the old pairing remains the problem, use Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Forget This Car, then set it up again. This removes that saved CarPlay relationship; it is not an instruction to erase the iPhone.
Recheck after each change. If the phone works with the same cable in another compatible wired CarPlay car but not in the MG, note that result. It narrows the investigation; it does not by itself prove the MG socket is defective.
05 / If you use Android
Check Google’s current Android Auto requirements and connection advice for the phone. Follow its setup and permissions prompts; do not install an unofficial APK. Current Google guidance takes priority over an older handbook’s instruction to download a separate app.
Check that Android Auto is enabled on the car’s system where that control is provided. If saved-car settings are the issue, Google describes forgetting previously connected cars before connecting again. Read that option carefully: “Forget all cars” also removes other saved car relationships.
06 / Use a small test matrix
- A replacement cable fixes the same phone: retain that cable and retire the unreliable one from car use. Charging alone did not exclude the cable.
- Another compatible phone works with the same direct cable and port: focus on the original phone’s connector, software and permissions.
- Two compatible phones fail with two known-good direct cables: record the car software version and exact error. That is useful evidence for checking the assigned port and infotainment system.
- Only the wireless adapter fails: keep the working wired baseline; investigate the accessory separately rather than resetting the car.
- Maps appear but sound is absent: select the intended media source and adjust the volume while the missing audio type is actually playing. Call, navigation and media volume can behave differently. Record which one fails.
Do not wiggle a loose plug repeatedly to keep a connection alive, probe the socket with metal, disconnect the 12-volt battery or install forum firmware. Stop using a hot or damaged connector.
07 / If it still fails, hand over the test—not a guess
Record the MG4 model/year and infotainment version, phone model/OS, direct cable connector types, assigned socket, exact message and your two-phone/two-cable results. Keep a parked photo of the error. Request a check using a known-good compatible phone and cable, with the tested software version and result recorded. That gives the repairer a reproducible fault instead of “CarPlay sometimes does not work”.

First useful check
Park safely. Use a direct data-capable cable and the documented projection port; compare one cable or phone at a time.
Read the result
A replacement cable restoring the same phone narrows the fault to that connection. Two phones/two good cables failing calls for a documented car-side check.
Stop or change approach: Stop using a hot, damaged or loose connector. Do not probe the port or install forum firmware.
Prepare a useful record
MG4/year, infotainment version, phone/OS, assigned port and two-phone/two-cable results.

Evidence and answer standard
Documented checks; outcome depends on the test. The date records an evidence review, not a physical test of your car. A forum report can identify a question; it cannot establish a universal repair.
