Use this guide while parked, with the vehicle safely secured. iSMART features differ by model, trim, software and market. The menu names shown by your UK vehicle and the in-app user manual take priority over generic screenshots.
1. Check phone and vehicle compatibility
The current UK App Store listing requires iOS 16.0 or newer. Update iOS first if the official listing will not install.
Open the official listing on the phone. Google Play will show whether that exact device and Android build are compatible; its public page does not state one universal minimum Android version.
A compatible phone is only half of the check. The vehicle must also provide MG iSMART or a vehicle-binding screen. App functions depend on the exact model, trim, market and vehicle software, so a missing feature shown on somebody else’s phone does not necessarily indicate a fault.
Current and earlier UK MG coverage
This is the coverage position MyMGEV can support from published MG material. Listed means iSMART connectivity is evidenced for the model; it does not promise that every remote function appears on every trim or software build.
MG4 EV / XPOWER
iSMART-equipped UK cars use the vehicle account or binding screen. Follow the QR code shown by that exact infotainment version.
MG4 EV Urban
Open the car’s account or binding menu first. Do not assume the established MG4 menu sequence is identical on the newer Urban system.
MGS5 EV
MG UK explicitly lists iSMART app connectivity. Pair through the vehicle-generated binding route and expect functions to vary by trim.
MGS6 EV
Use the in-car user manual and binding screen for the delivered UK vehicle. MyMGEV will not copy the MGS5 route without model-specific evidence.
MG Cyberster
Official MG material lists iSMART remote functions. Start from the Cyberster’s own account/binding display, not an MG4 screenshot.
MG IM5
The UK brochure lists iSMART. The IM cockpit differs substantially, so use its on-screen account flow and current in-car instructions.
MG IM6
Use the IM6 vehicle-generated account or binding route. Do not assume its menus, permissions or update flow match other MG models.
MG5 EV
Official MG material lists iSMART Lite on relevant cars. Functions and setup vary by production version; confirm the system shown in the vehicle.
MG ZS EV
The facelift/New ZS EV is officially documented with iSMART. Earlier cars may differ, so confirm that the car itself displays an iSMART binding function.
2. Identify which layer has failed
“The app does not work” can describe several separate problems. Start by placing the symptom in one group:
- Registration: you cannot create or verify the app account.
- Sign-in: the account exists but login or password recovery fails.
- Binding: the app is signed in but no vehicle is attached.
- Connection: the vehicle is bound but data is old, blank or a remote command fails.
- Feature availability: the app works but a control shown elsewhere is absent on your exact model.
MG’s official app listings state that a vehicle must be registered in the app and that available functions depend on the MG model. A missing control therefore does not, by itself, prove a fault.
3. Prepare the phone and vehicle
- Confirm the exact model, trim and model year. Check that the vehicle itself presents an iSMART or binding function.
- Install or update only the app published by SAIC MOTOR Overseas Intelligent Mobility Technology Co., Ltd. from the official UK Apple App Store or Google Play listing.
- Register your own account and complete email or phone verification before entering the car’s binding screen.
- Allow camera access when the app requests it for QR scanning. Location, Bluetooth or notification permissions may be needed for particular features, but they do not replace the vehicle’s own internet connection.
- Keep both the phone and vehicle online. Bluetooth proximity alone does not prove that the vehicle has a mobile-data connection.
- Have the vehicle stationary and powered in the state requested by its own screen. Keep every access device supplied with your exact car—including any key fob or key card—available during first setup and do not attempt pairing while driving.
4. Bind through the vehicle-generated route
- Sign in to your own iSMART account on the compatible phone.
- On the car’s centre display, open its iSMART, account or vehicle-binding menu. Exact navigation varies by model.
- Select the option to bind or pair the vehicle. The car should generate a QR code.
- Inside the official phone app, choose the add/bind vehicle or QR-scan control and scan the code directly from the car’s screen.
- Complete any verification shown by the app or vehicle. Keep both screens open until a clear success message appears.
- Close and reopen the vehicle page in the app, then refresh once. Confirm that the displayed model or VIN ending belongs to your car before using remote controls.
5. If the car is bound but data is stale
- Read the “last updated” time before refreshing. An old timestamp is different from an incorrect live value.
- Check whether the phone has internet access and whether the car is parked where it can obtain its own connection.
- Wake and use the vehicle normally, park and secure it, then allow the systems time to report before one fresh request.
- Check the official store for an app update and restart the app. Avoid repeated rapid refreshes or repeated remote commands.
- Compare more than one item: state of charge, lock state and timestamp. Record exactly which values update and which do not.
Do not treat the app as the sole safety check. Confirm doors are physically locked, read charging state at the vehicle or charger, and use the vehicle display for decisions that require current information.
6. If the vehicle is still linked to a previous owner
Do not attempt to access, guess or reuse the previous owner’s account. Ask the supplying retailer to confirm that the digital ownership record has been transferred. If the app reports that the vehicle is already bound, capture that wording before continuing.
Prepare proof that you are the current keeper or purchaser, but send it only through a verified MG or retailer channel. Redact unnecessary financial and identity information. After transfer, review vehicle profiles, paired phones, digital keys and saved destinations where your model provides those controls.
7. Capture evidence once
- MG model, trim, registration year and infotainment software version if visible;
- phone model, operating-system version and iSMART app version;
- date, time and whether the vehicle had mobile reception;
- the exact screen and action that failed;
- word-for-word error message and last-updated timestamp;
- whether sign-in works and whether the correct vehicle appears;
- what changed after an app restart or a later vehicle wake-up.
Crop screenshots so they exclude email addresses, registration numbers, location, VIN, QR codes and security information. You can send a redacted pattern report to MyMGEV.
8. Escalation ladder
- App-store route: confirm the current official app version and developer identity.
- In-app help: use the support or feedback route presented by the official app, if available on your version.
- Supplying retailer: use for handover, used-car binding, ownership transfer or missing vehicle-side menus.
- MG retailer/support: use when the same vehicle-side or connection problem repeats after the basic checks, or when the car displays a fault.
Do not factory-reset the infotainment system, disconnect the 12-volt battery or remove vehicle trim merely to cure an app problem unless the handbook or an MG professional specifically directs it.
