Quick answer: on an established MG4 fitted with electric folding mirrors, power the car on while safely parked, rotate the mirror-adjustment knob to its centre O position and push the knob down. Push down again to unfold. This is the checked MY23 handbook procedure, not a requirement to lock the car first.

First identify the mirror hardware
This guide covers the earlier UK MG4 EV, sold in the 2022–2025 period, using the MY23 owner manual, printed/PDF page 67. It does not cover MG4 EV Urban or establish controls for a later revised MG4. The handbook distinguishes manually folding mirrors from electrically folding mirrors, both marked as equipment-dependent. Electric glass adjustment is not the same thing as electric folding. A trim name or a star beside a handbook heading is not enough to diagnose your actual car.
Check the specification for your own model year and supplied handbook. For the manual-fold version the handbook permits folding the housing backwards by hand. Do not apply that instruction to an unidentified powered assembly, push the glass itself, or try to add folding hardware through a screen setting.
Electric mirrors: one stationary comparison
- Park somewhere clear of obstacles, select P and keep fingers clear of the hinge. Free any ice safely before testing; do not drive a motor against an obstruction.
- Power the vehicle on and put the adjustment knob in its middle O position. Push the knob down once. Both fitted electric mirrors should fold. Push down again and confirm they return to their usable positions.
- Then compare ordinary locking/unlocking outside the car, with doors/boot properly closed and nobody left inside. The checked handbook describes automatic fold/deploy with locking/unlocking. If your matching infotainment manual provides a lock-fold preference, check that separately; changing it cannot fix a damaged hinge.
Read the result before changing anything else
- Both work from the knob, but not when locking: the motors have demonstrated movement. Check whether the car actually locked and whether its fitted lock-fold preference is enabled. Follow the separate locking guide below if locking is the problem.
- One side fails, clicks, stalls or sits crooked: stop cycling it. Record which side and any ice, impact or recent work; request an inspection of that side’s hinge/drive and electrical operation.
- Neither folds: confirm equipment and the powered-on/O-position procedure first. If electric folding is documented but still absent, request a switch-input and mirror-drive diagnostic. Do not dismantle the door or fit an unverified fuse.
A mirror was knocked out of position
The MY23 handbook describes one powered fold-and-deploy cycle to reset an electrically folding mirror moved manually or accidentally. Use that only if there is no visible damage, obstruction or abnormal resistance. If it fails to return correctly, stop; repeated cycles are not a repair for a broken mechanism.
Before driving, unfold the mirrors and restore the view. The handbook also requires them unfolded for the 360-degree around-view system. Do not treat a distorted camera image with folded mirrors as a software fault.
Useful fault record: model year/trim, confirmed mirror type, powered-on state, knob result on each side, lock/unlock result and any impact/ice/noise. Ask for the failed function to be demonstrated after repair.

Question lead: UK MG4 owners asking how to fold without locking. The original owner reported success after finding the control; the procedure above is independently checked against the MY23 manual. Evidence checked 18 October 2026.
