USED MG / YOUR FIRST DAY

A used MG needs an exact handover.

Used MG handover — Identify the actual vehicle

Check the generation, battery version, keys, account binding and supplied charging equipment before applying advice for a newer MG.

The badge and registration year are a starting point. A useful used-MG handover establishes the version, access devices, connected account and charging equipment you are actually receiving.

Applies to

UK used electric MG handovers, including earlier MG4, MG5 and ZS EV cars. MyMGEV's current-range selectors do not represent every older vehicle. Do not select a newer grade just to make an older car fit a tool.

01 / Build an identity record

Copy the full model and grade from the vehicle documents. Record the battery version, production/model-year information where available, full software version and handbook edition. Ask the seller to resolve conflicting descriptions before using a newer brochure as evidence.

MG4 EV Urban is a separate model family from MG4 EV. Earlier SE/Trophy names should not be silently converted into the current Premium grades. Likewise, MG's announcement introducing iSMART on the refreshed ZS EV does not establish the same remote functions on an earlier ZS EV.

02 / Demonstrate access, not just a login

At the handover

  • Count and check the supplied physical keys or other access devices.
  • Confirm the documented backup-access route.
  • Where iSMART is supported, check that the vehicle can be associated with your own account through the authorised process.
  • If it remains bound to another account, ask the supplying retailer to resolve the ownership record. Keep a written reference.
  • Separate phone audio pairing from app ownership and remote access.

Do not accept someone else's password as an account transfer. Never share a key code, password or full VIN publicly. Use the existing iSMART pairing and connection guide for the supported workflow and escalation boundary.

03 / Check what can charge this car

Identify each supplied cable or portable charging device and inspect its condition. A household portable charger and a Type 2 cable are different equipment. Ask for a demonstration with compatible equipment where practical, and record any warning or failed session.

Confirm the charge-target and scheduling functions in the actual car and handbook. Advice for another battery version is not a reason to invent an 80% slider, balancing procedure or discharge routine. Do not deliberately run the battery low to test a seller's claim.

04 / Leave with an evidence trail

Keep condition photographs, the key/equipment list, service-history documents and written answers to unresolved questions. A dashboard range estimate is not a battery-health certificate. If a battery-health percentage is offered, ask who measured it, when, using which method and whether a proper diagnostic report is available.

For a supported current UK grade, use Exact MG Card and My Garage. For an earlier car, retain the actual identity in your own records rather than saving an incorrect current grade. The first-month guide remains a separate route into everyday familiarisation.
